The Lucerne Festival, the world renowned music festival based in Switzerland, conceived this project in an effort to support the recovery of the Tohoku region affected by the devastating earthquake and catastrophic tsunami of March 11th, 2011, through music. The special venue designed for this project is called “Ark Nova” (meaning “New Ark” in Latin), a 18m x 30m x 36m (60ft. x 98ft. x 118ft.) portable concert hall.
It was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. The venue seats approximately 500 people and can be used for various types of musical and staged performances. The project also provides several educational programs for youth orchestras and events for the local community.
Many fans around the world have mourned the passing of the great conductor Claudio Abbado on January 20th, 2014. Succeeding the intention of the founder of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, this project aspires to become a symbol of the artistic and cultural reconstruction and enrichment of the Tohoku Region. For 2015, this project will be held in Fukushima.
